How to be Successful in Law: 5 Practical Tips for Fresh Graduates

You have completed your law degree, You've gone through Bar Examination, You've followed all necessary registration processes and you are an advocate now what next, this is the most common question I guess every law graduate have in mind after their collage, Here are 5 most effective practical tips which will help you to grow and succeed in legal profession. 

But remember one thing: real success is not an overnight thing; it comes with a price tag of Hard Work, Dedication, Smart Choices, and Right habits. Whether you are a law student or a young advocate, these tips and tricks can help you grow and succeed in the legal profession.

1. Read Daily(Even if just a little)

   Reading is the best habits you can include in your routine if you want successes in anything in your life, but in legal profession it is must to have- reading habit- as law is a reading profession, you don't have to read it all at once- start with small portions - Judgments, Bare Acts or just some legal news, Make it a habit to read at least 10 - 15 pages everyday over time it adds up believe me you wont regret it.

         Tip: Focus on understanding concepts, not just counting pages and memorizing.

2. Become a Bare Buddy

   Know you bare act well, you cannot argue in court well if you don't know the law, keep the major bare acts handy and go through it regularly.

   3. CPC - Civil Procedure Code,

3. Improve your speaking skills

   In court, you have to speak a lot for your client. That's why they hired you in the first place to convey their thoughts and take the judge into confidence for them. Many young lawyers fear public speaking because they lack confidence, but don't forget "practice makes a man perfect." Practice enough to overcome your weaknesses. 

   Speak in front of a mirror, participate in Moot Competitions, and join debates gradually; this will help you learn how to present your case effectively and clearly in court.

   Tips: Focus on speaking slowly and clearly; avoid rushing. 

4. Learn by Observing

   Law schools teach theory, but the real lesson starts in the courtroom. One of the best ways to be a good lawyer is by observing, A courtroom is a live classroom for a lawyer; observe how senior advocates are presenting arguments, how the judge is responding, how procedures are followed, and try to understand the strategy behind every step. 

   Even if you are not actively participating in the court though just sitting quietly in a courtroom can teach you a lot more than.

   Tip: Choose one or two cases and follow them completely in the court, take notes, understand the strategy behind everything.

5. Start Networking

   Connections matter in the legal field in law who you know is as important as what you know. Many young lawyers completely ignore networking, but it is the most powerful tool to build your successful legal career. 

   Start making connections early as students, connect with your classmates, seniors, professors, and seniors at the bar, build a strong and healthy relationship with them they can offer you opportunities, advice, mentorship, and guidance. 

   Tip: Always carry a visiting card, and follow up with people you meet through email or LinkedIn.
